Former vice president Joe Biden struggled to get through his spiel at a campaign stop in New Hampshire on Wednesday, when climate change crusaders stole the spotlight from the fourth-place frontrunner.

“Senator Sanders and others are proposing Medicare for All plan, that’s going to cost ..,” Biden said as hecklers shouted over him.

“The Trumpers are here I guess, I don’t know,” Biden said.

The climate justice disrupters yelled something about eliminating fossil fuels, and Biden quickly acquiesced to their demands.

“We are going to get rid of fossil fuels,” he said.

The dust up drew chants of “We Want Joe!” from his supporters, who numbered in the dozens. Several held signs that read “IAFF Fire Fighters for Biden” in front of a large American flag as Biden stood in the center of a small church, arguing with the hecklers roped off on the sidelines.

“That’s ok. These guys are ok,” Biden said, quieting the chant. “They want to do the same thing I want to do. They want to phase out fossil fuels and we’re going to phase out fossil fuels.

“Look, Senator Sanders and others are proposing Medicare …,” he continued.

But the pesky protestors wouldn’t relent, and began shouting again as he continued the talk.

“Don’t act like the Trumpers, ok?” Biden shot back. “Alright? Don’t be like Trump. Please. We’re on the same team. Don’t be like Trump. I’ll talk to you afterwards if you’d like to talk, ok?”

Biden attempted a third time to get back on track, but it was the same deal all over again.

“Look, Senator Sanders …,” he said, only to stop again as a heckler talked over him.

Audio from coverage of the event did not pick up the woman’s words, but she clearly was not impressed with Biden’s plan to fix the changing climate.

Biden listened intently to what his hater had to say, then attempted to gain her favor.

“That’s why in our administration we wiped out – no more coal plants,” Biden said as he approached a woman who was holding something in a jar.

She pointed out there’s a coal plant in New Hampshire.

“There is one in New Hampshire. We can’t do it all at once,” Biden said. “We’re working on it kid. We’re working on it.

“Why don’t you sit down and I promise you, let’s talk,” he begged. “Please, please.”

The uncomfortable exchange comes just days after Biden defied all expectations in the Iowa caucuses to come in fourth behind Pete Buttigieg, and Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. Biden has led all Democratic candidates in the vast majority of nationwide polls. Biden currently holds about a 5-point lead on his closest competitor, Sanders, in the Real Clear Politics average, which uses all polls dating back to mid-January.

Biden trails Sanders by 9 percentage points in the most recent Boston Globe poll in New Hampshire, where voters will take to the polls on Tuesday.

The 77-year-old career politician addressed his disappointing finish in Iowa during the Wednesday stop in New Hampshire.

“I’m not going to sugarcoat it,” he said. “We took a gut punch in Iowa.”
