Socialist Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez accused Democrat leaders of racism in a recent interview, and now the Congressional Black Caucus is putting her comments into proper perspective.

AOC is among four freshman lawmakers with Justice Democrats who have warred with party leaders since taking office in January, often with the younger, socialist flank attacking the old guard online.

The situation escalated earlier this year when Pelosi attempted to address the online attacks during a closed-door meeting with Democrats, but it hasn’t stopped Justice Democrats from calling out their colleagues or House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from firing back in the press.

The ordeal has now devolved into AOC accusing Pelosi of racism, and the CBC defending the Democrat leader with a few facts about Justice Democrats’ agenda to replace black lawmakers in relatively safe districts.

“When these comments first started, I kind of thought that she was keeping the progressive flank at more of an arm’s distance in order to protect more moderate members, which I understand,” AOC told The Washington Post.

“But the persistent singling out … it got to a point where it was just outright disrespectful … the explicit singling out of newly elected women of color.”

The charge didn’t sit well with the CBC, which pointed out that AOC and Justice Democrats are targeting several Democrats for primary challenges in 2020 and most seem to be targeted at black lawmakers.

According to The Hill:

Justice Democrats is backing primary challengers to eight-term Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), a Hispanic Caucus member, and 10-term Rep. Wm. Lacy Clay (D-Mo.), a member of the Congressional Black Caucus. The insurgent group also made noise this year about challenging Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), a CBC member seen as the heir apparent to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

And CBC leaders are fretting that Justice Democrats may target other black lawmakers in the coming weeks and months, including Reps. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.), Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio), Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) and Anthony Brown (D-Md.).

“It just seem strange that the social Democrats seem to be targeting members of the Congressional Black Caucus, individuals who have stood and fought to make sure African Americans are included and part of this process,” Congressman Gregory Meeks, a New York Democrat, told the news site. “I don’t know what that agenda is, but if they want to come after members of the Black Caucus, it’s two ways.”

Currently, Justice Democrats have four members in Congress, while the CBC boasts a membership of 55, including two senators, and those targeted by Justice Democrats aren’t taking the attack lightly.

“They’re going after the wrong target,” Rep. Clay said. “Instead of fighting Republicans and defeating Trump and holding on to our majority, they find it convenient to go after their own, which is to me a bunch of BS.”

An unnamed senior House Democratic aide told The Hill AOC’s charges of racism against Pelosi and party leaders is “ironic and funny” considering the primary challenges from Justice Democrats.

“She’s only a woman of color when it’s convenient,” the aide said. “None of the things she’s fought for aligned with communities of color and her group is funded by elitist white liberals; she’s a puppet.”

Meeks said the CBC and other top Democrats aren’t even sure who exactly is calling the shots with Justice Democrats, but he believes it’s time for a chat with CBC leaders.

“We will have to, at some point, sit down and see: Is this something that is directed at members of the Congressional Black Caucus?” he said. “We’re going to sit down with however the social Dems are. We have to find out who they are. Who is really running this show. We have to figure that out.”
