On the eve of Memorial Day, residents of Cedar Falls, Iowa awoke to discover someone had vandalized a memorial to veterans.

Freedom Rock“The Freedom Rock,” which is painted to feature a draped American flag, a quadruple amputee in a Navy t-shirt and a woman praying over a headstone, was tagged with black spray paint Saturday night, KWWL reports.

Vandals partially covered a poem reading:

When the battles are done
The war isn’t over
For our veterans
Or their family

It is just the beginning.

Cedar Falls American Legion No. 237 Commander Tom Hagarty tells The Courier a cleanup is being planned.

The paper reports:

The rock includes images of the Five Sullivan Brothers killed in World War II, Medal of Honor winner Robert Hibbs of Cedar Falls, a U.S. Army second lieutenant killed in Vietnam in 1966, and Taylor Morris, a U.S. Navy explosive ordnance disposal expert who survived a bomb blast in Afghanistan despite losing portions of all four limbs. It also bears an image of veterans and people of various generations saluting the flag.

The Freedom Rock, located in Cedar Falls Veterans Park, was completed last year and dedicated in November.

“I think it’s terrific,” Jim Sullivan said at the dedication last year, according to The Courier. “We should remember all of our fallen and injured veterans.”

Retired Iowa Army National Guard Brig. Gen. Ron Albrecht told the paper, “We are a part of this rock — the foundation that holds our great nation together.

“That rock’s foundation shakes, but it will never break. Not now. Not even in the future.”
