It’s not a purse snatcher or identity thief Las Vegas police are pursuing, but rather someone who wants children to cross the street more safely.
Cops seem to be engaged in a running battle with a person who keeps painting a crosswalk where the city has not authorized one.
A crosswalk has appeared five times at the same location. Clark County crews have painted it over four times, according to ABC 10.
They contend it “is a hazard because drivers do not know it’s there and do not expect pedestrians.”
Fox 5 reports the “phony” crosswalk connects Goolsby Elementary School to two residential communities.
Clark County spokesman Dan Kulin says the crosswalk is actually “endangering” children.
“They are creating that sense of security on there for the pedestrians but a driver would have no way knowing a crosswalk is there. Normally you would see signs,” he says.
Residents say the bust street could use one there.
“I go jogging in the morning sometimes, and even I have to be careful, and I’m an adult, so you can imagine little children trying to cross the street by themselves,” neighbor Joel Garcia tells the news station.
“There is a right way to request, to look into whether something is needed. This isn’t the right way to do that,” he Kulin responded.
For now, the county will spend “a few hundred” dollars painting over the rogue crosswalk and be on the lookout for the vigilante security advocate.
If caught, he or she could face fines or jail time.
