A Virginia mother is accused of committing the same crime she was turning herself in for at the courthouse.
Laquanda Newby made an appearance at the Henrico County Courthouse Monday to answer for an accusation that she left her children–aged six and one–unattended in a hot car.
Sheriff’s deputies say she did it again while turning herself in.
“Their shirts were wet, sweat rolling off their brows,” according to Henrico Sheriff’s Capt. David Kinkle. “They seemed to be OK, but it was very hot.”
CBS 6 reports Newby’s car windows were rolled up and temperatures were in the 90s.
“Had a citizen not alerted us to this, it’s a situation that would’ve turned out much differently,” Kinkle says.
Deputies estimate the children were in the car for over an hour. They brought the kids inside, gave them water and alerted their father, who picked them up.
Newby was at the courthouse after she promised to turn herself in after another alleged incident in May.
Police say she left her children in the car at a Sam’s Club. When they arrived, she was near the car and they did not witness the alleged crime, thus not making an arrest.
Now, the mother is charged with three counts of contributing to the delinquency or abuse of child after the courthouse incident.
She was booked into the Henrico County jail and her bond was denied.
