It was framed as a dramatic moment. An undocumented worker from Wisconsin traveled to Iowa to confront Scott Walker on immigration. Here is how the Washington Post recorded the incident.
“We’re a nation of laws,” Walker, the Republican governor of Wisconsin, repeatedly told Jose Flores, 38, who was joined by two of his four children, Luis, 7, and Leslie, 13, who had tears rolling down her cheeks throughout the exchange. Flores, who lives in Waukesha and works for a medical supply factory, said he and his wife live in fear of being deported and separated from their children, who he said were all born in the United States.
“My point,” Walker said, “is that you have to follow the law, follow the process.”
High drama.
But there is a key detail in this story that lies buried deep in the story rather than in the headline where it belongs. This entire episode was a setup by the left-wing immigrants rights group Voces de la Frontera. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel adds this detail.
“Governor Walker, why are you trying to break my family apart?” said Leslie Flores, 13.
She was accompanied by her father, José, and her 7-year-old brother, Luís. They traveled to Iowa with the assistance of the immigrant rights group Voces de la Frontera.
No one is questioning the sincerity of Jose Flores, his situation, and his desire to live and work in the United States. But the reality is, Flores was being used. Voces is basically a radical arm of the Democratic Party. They organize and campaign for Democrats, they are heavily involved in unionizing workers and undocumented workers, and they seek an immigration policy that involves an end to deportation and the legalization and citizenship of all undocumented workers.
This was a complete setup. A trap. It was orchestrated for political effect, and it was meant to garner headlines while Voces hides in the background.
