Not only was the 19,980-seat arena full, but “thousands more” Bernie Sanders fans were forced to listen outside at a Portland, Oregon campaign rally Sunday.

Sanders was appearing in the second state of his west coast swing and the campaign originally ordered up the 12,000-seat Memorial Coliseum. After it became clear many more people were going to show up, the campaign scrambled to change venues.

“This is the only guy who is really good and that is why he can get 10,000, 15,000 or who knows, we are aiming at 20,000. That would be wonderful,” Sanders supporter Russ Miller tells KGW.

They got that — and then some.

Sanders’ campaign estimated 28,000 were participating, between the crowd inside the auditorium, out in the street and viewing online.

“This is an unbelievable turnout,” Sanders said during his remarks. “This is what this campaign is about. Bringing people together.”

The Washington Post called it the “largest 2016 contender crowd by far.”

The crowd was overwhelmingly white and one supporter carried a sign reading: “SOCIALISM: America’s past, America’s future.” BuzzFeed reporter E. McMorris-Santoro shows the crowd when all the way to the roof:

KATU reports:

Sanders spoke for about an hour and touched on things like sustainable energy, the need for affordable higher education and the environment. But much of his speech centered on economic issues.

Sanders said income inequality was “the great moral issue of our time.”

“This campaign is sending a message to the billionaire class – yes, we have the courage to take you on,” he told the overflow crowd.

Black Lives Matter agitators vowed to follow Sanders from Seattle to the event, but no protest was apparent.

Sanders will make stops in Los Angeles today.
