Mitt Romney couldn’t do it. John McCain couldn’t do it, either.
But according to a new poll, Donald Trump can defeat the Democrats in the all-important battleground state of Florida.
A new poll released by Bay News 9 Tampa/News 13 Orlando finds Trump beating Hillary Clinton in a hypothetical head-to-head match up 47% to 43%.
The survey finds 35% of Hispanics would support Trump.
By comparison, Mitt Romney gained the support of 27% of Hispanics in 2012, according to the Roper Center, while McCain won the support of 31% of Hispanics. So one could say Trump is besting them in that category, as well.
Dr. Ben Carson is the only other Republican ahead of Clinton in Florida. Carson would defeat Clinton 47% to 44%.
The poll finds Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio — who have both been elected state-wide there — lose to Clinton. Hillary is ahead of Bush 46% to 44% while Clinton edges out Rubio by one percentage point, 46% to 45%.
Despite regularly speaking Spanish on the campaign trail, Bush garners less of the Hispanic vote than Trump. In a head-to-head match up with Clinton, Bush nets 34% of the Hispanic vote, according to the poll — one percentage point less than The Donald.
The Bay News 9 Tampa/News 13 Orlando survey finds Trump and Carson more easily defeating socialist Bernie Sanders in Florida. Trump would win 50% to 41% while Carson would beat the Vermont senator 48% to 40%. Bush’s victory over Sanders is within the margin of error, 46% to 44%. The spread is the same for Rubio.
In the race for the Republican nomination, Trump gets 37% to Ben Carson’s 17% to Marco Rubio’s 16%. Bush is a distant fifth with 7%.
