If Hillary Clinton is looking to replace her “Fighting For Us” slogan, there’s one that might be more apropos: “The beatings will continue until morale improves.”
Campaign manager Robby Mook sent a browbeating email to supporters on Tuesday, essentially claiming he overestimated their support for Hillary.
He wrote:
With just a few hours to go until the May fundraising deadline, I want to confess something to you:
I was wrong.
I was sure that if Trump became the Republican nominee, this team would step up and the support would come pouring in.
In fact, we made budgetary plans for the rest of this campaign based on that assumption.
Instead, our fundraising has actually slowed down a little bit, and if things don’t change, we’ll have to adjust our plans, and run a smaller, less aggressive campaign — which means that Donald Trump has a better chance of beating us.
After asking for $1, Mook eased up a bit from the finger-waving lecture:
Don’t get me wrong, you’ve been amazing. Every time we’ve been in a tough spot, you’ve shown up big. And supporters like you are the only reason we’re just one week out from finishing this primary and nominating the first woman for president in either major political party.
I don’t take any of that for granted.
But this general election is going to be a different campaign from the primary. We won’t beat Donald Trump if we try to play his game — we’re not going to race deeper and deeper into the gutter.
Instead, we’re going into more and more communities — with organizers and volunteers who can talk directly to their friends and neighbors about the values we all share. And that means we need the resources to open field offices, install phone lines, host trainings, buy clipboards, and do all the other million little things it takes to win an honest-to-god grassroots campaign.
Today, I need you to step up again. I know sometimes it’s easy to think of a donation of $1 as a token gesture — but it’s not. Grassroots donations like yours are literally how we’re funding a campaign that will defeat Donald Trump.
Mook has sent at least two other emails acknowledging fundraising is down.
