Maxine Waters applauded charges being dropped against actor Jussie Smollett, and her reasoning included the idea that “no one got hurt,” despite pictures of the “Empire” star with a battered face.

Speaking to Extra at the NAACP Image Awards last week, the California congresswoman was asked about the alleged attack on the actor that Chicago police say is a hate hoax.

“It’s a correct thing that the charges were dropped,” Waters said.

“First of all, we probably never will know all of the details, we’ve heard a lot of information. Uh, no one was hurt,” she continued, despite the original reporting indicating he was “viciously attacked” and the perpetrators “beat him badly and fractured a rib,” according to TMZ.

But that’s all apparently forgotten now, and Smollett has not seemed interested in finding who he thinks the real attackers are.

Regardless, Waters strangely rationalized the whole thing.

“That is, physically, killed, shot,” she continued.

“He had never committed a crime before. He forfeited the bail. And it’s this kind of situation where they close the case all over the country every day, I learned. This is not unusual,” she claimed.

But Smollett was convicted of a crime — in Waters’ home city!

The Washington Times reported in February:

The actor suspected of faking a hate crime against himself has a criminal record — for providing false information to authorities.

NBC News reported Tuesday that “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett pleaded no contest to several charges in 2007 in Los Angeles, one of which was providing false information to authorities.

Citing a Los Angeles City Attorney spokesman, NBC reported that Mr. Smollett was sentenced to two years probation in the case, which also included a DUI count and a charge of driving without a license.

The city attorney’s office first confirmed the convictions to NBC News and later other media outlets confirmed the story.

Waters told Extra she hoped to see Smollett “very soon.”
