What would we do if we didn’t have such valiant warriors against personal responsibility, such as New York Sen. Chuck Schumer?

Chuck_SchumerAmerica’s Overbearing Father has a new nemesis: caffeinated peanut butter.

New York’s senior senator is calling on the FDA to investigate STEEM Caffeinated Peanut Butter.

“Parents across the country shouldn’t have to worry about a scenario in which their child might unknowingly bite into a peanut butter and jelly sandwich that contains more caffeine than two cups of coffee” Schumer says in a press release, according to The Recorder.

“To think that peanut butter, one of the snacks most closely associated with children, might have to be stored in the medicine cabinet as opposed to the kitchen cabinet should serve as a jolt to the FDA. This caffeinated peanut butter should spur the agency to address the issue of caffeine being added to everyday food products and the effect that will have on the health of consumers and children.”

There is reportedly the equivalent of 1 cup of coffee in each tablespoon of STEEM. To Schumer, that’s just unacceptable and he wants the feds to do something about it.

But according to The Recorder, the company clearly labels it’s product, so parents know it contains caffeine. So as long as the consumer can read that it contains caffeine, the child conceivably wouldn’t “unknowingly” bite into a sandwich containing the stimulant.

But such common sense hasn’t stopped Schumer from launching silly attacks on other products in the past.

Earlier this year, Reason produced a lengthy list of the senator’s previous targets, including these articles:

There are many, many more.

As The Recorder opines, “So perhaps it’s best to let the buyer do the policing, keep an eye on their kids’ eating and let them intelligent Americans judge how they like their peanut butter and caffeine — separately or together.”

Personal responsibility? How can anyone be safe with that?
