A California physical education teacher recently gave Elk Grove police a workout, then spent the night in the county jail for his booze-fueled antics.

Elk Grove Police told The Sacramento Bee that officers encountered 54-year-old John Chandler behind the wheel of a parked vehicle with the engine running on Elk Grove Boulevard, where they contend he showed signs of being under the influence.

According to KTXL:

As officers took Chandler into custody, officials say he resisted and even tried to spit on officers.

Chandler’s booking photo shows him bloodied and wide-eyed with his tongue sticking out.

The mugshot will undoubtedly amuse Chandler’s students at Martin Luther King, Jr. K-8. He’s still listed as a physical education teacher on the school’s website, though officials with the Sacrament City Unified School District refused to discuss his employment status with The Bee.

District spokesman Alex Barrios confirmed Chandler was a district employee when he was arrested Monday night, but declined further comment.

“Personnel matters are confidential,” SCUSD wrote in a prepared statement. “We are not at liberty to discuss them publicly. However, the district is treating this situation with the seriousness it deserves. We are listening and sympathetic to the concerns of parents and are working to address those concerns.”

Chandler was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail but was released by Thursday, KTXL reports.

He wasn’t the only physical education teacher arrested this week, however.

Sterling, Virginia physical education teacher Gary Goodwin, who goes by Kris, was arrested at Horizon Elementary School on Thursday morning after a school employee informed a school resource officer that he appeared intoxicated.

“Sources tell WTOP two bottles of vodka were found in Goodwin’s vehicle, which was parked in the employee parking lot,” according to the news site.

Unlike SCUSD, officials in the Loudoun County school system are keeping parents in the loop about the case.

“Physical Education teacher Kris Goodwin was arrested at school. School staff acted quickly. Another adult was in class with Mr. Goodwin when he was with students,” Principal Jennifer Ewing wrote in an email to parents. “The Loudoun County’s Sheriff’s Office handled this matter in a way that did not disrupt the school day.”

School spokesman Wayde Byard told WTOP Goodwin was hauled to a detention center and later released. He’s now on administrative leave, Byard said.

Goodwin’s arrest followed less than a week after another teacher in the district, Mill Run Elementary School teacher Brian Chamer, was charged with a misdemeanor last Thursday, when officials discovered alcohol in his stuff at school, according to the sheriff’s office.

It was the same week Loudoun County High School teacher Alison Briel pleaded guilty to sending nudie photos to several students, WTOP reports.
