“It was wet and dead.” That’s how Jay Armstead described the mouse that appeared on his sandwich at a Lincoln City, Oregon Subway restaurant.

“It was unfortunate I was the lucky recipient,” he tells KGW. “His tail was curled up and you could see his two front teeth.”

Look at that Beast of a mouse in the spinach at Subway today! Good thing we didn’t bite into it! AMAZING! WTF!!! The manager was in shock!

Armstead says he ordered some lettuce for his Italian club sandwich. When the Subway worker grabbed the lettuce, she also apparently grabbed the dead mouse in the bottom of the bin and inadvertently put it on the sandwich.

“We both basically saw the mouse at the same time,” Armstead says.

“It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen, but it’s also the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen,” says Matt Jones, who snapped the photo. “I laughed because I was like, there is no way this just happened.”

After the incident, Subway issued a statement saying:

“As soon as the customer alerted the owner about what happened, they were immediately given a full refund and an investigation was launched. To be cautious, all of the products in the sandwich unit were disposed of and a thorough cleaning took place, in which the Health Department gave the restaurant a clean bill of health. There were no other complaints made.”

The county health department arrived at the restaurant “promptly” to conduct an investigation.

They concluded the rodent did not come from inside the restaurant and likely from one of the suppliers.

“They [health inspectors] consulted with physicians and we followed their advice that, although it is not very appetizing, the risk of someone becoming sick due to eating lettuce with those particular circumstances were very low,” county health chief Cheryl Connell says, according to the New York Post.

Jones says they were both offered a refund and another sandwich.

“No, I’ll probably never eat here again,” he responded.
