The FBI is on a manhunt for a dangerous criminal who defaced a Las Vegas mosque with raw bacon in an apparent “hate crime” targeting its Muslim worshipers.

baconmosquePolice are attempting to identify a white man who wrapped raw bacon around the door handles of Masjid Tawheed, a mosque in Spring Valley about two miles from the Las Vegas strip, ABC 10 reports.

The incident occurred at about 3:15 a.m. Sunday and was caught on surveillance video. Images show a white male with a baseball cap and sunglasses, a mustache, goatee and long sideburns who first wrapped bacon around the rear door before weaving the food through the front door handles, as well, The Smoking Gun reports.

Mosque members found the bacon – which is forbidden to eat or touch in the Islamic faith – when they arrived for worship early Sunday morning.

“To us, it’s not as offensive as he might think,” Fayyaz Raja, the vice president of the Islamic Association of Las Vegas at Masjid Tawheed, told the Las Vegas Sun. “According to our religion, yes, we can’t touch it, we can’t eat it. That I understand. But to me, it’s comical.”

Metro Police officer Larry Hadfield told the Sun officers responded to a vandalism call about the incident around 9:30 a.m. Sunday and are now investigating it as a hate crime.

“Legally, the status of ‘hate crime’ in Nevada applies when it is determined that a crime occurs ‘because of certain actual or perceived characteristics’ of a victim including race, religion, national origin, physical or mental disability, or sexual orientation,” according to the news site.

The Las Vegas incident follows similar stunts at mosques around the country this year, including pork tied to an Oklahoma mosque, a severed pig’s head delivered to a Philadelphia mosque, and a box with the Quran and pork grinds sent to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper told the Sun.

“I don’t know what it is about pork that these anti-Muslim bigots think it’s like kryptonite to Muslims,” Hooper said. “You just take it off, you wash it off and go about your business.”

“There are still people out there who love to hate, unfortunately, so this is one of the ad incidents and it’s unfortunate,” Masjid Tawheed founder Rokai Yusufzai told ABC 10.

Raja told the Sun Masjid Tawheed wasn’t the only facility targeted in Sunday’s bacon incident – the vandal also hit a neighboring business with the bacon treatment – though Raja believes the culprit was unaware that the building is not affiliated with the mosque and one of the firm’s principals is Jewish.

Danny Amster, principal at the neighboring Dakem & Associates, said he believes the business was targeted because it’s adjacent to the mosque, not because he’s Jewish.

“People who know me know I’m Jewish, but the guy who did this would have no way to know,” Amster told the Sun. “It’s just a stupid, senseless act.”

Other local acts of vandalism against Muslim mosques have been far more serious.

Aslam Abdullah, director of Masjid Ibrahim mosque in northwest Las Vegas, told the Sun local mosques have been hit with graffiti, and some have had windows smashed. Nationally, CAIR claims mosques have faced numerous attacks this year, from burglaries, smashed windows and firebombs to bomb threats and mass shootings.

Hooper said CAIR documented 75 incidents at mosques in 2015, three times as many as last year.

Hooper blames Donald Trump for the problems.

“The council has tracked a significant uptick in incidents in the wake of the Paris attacks and San Bernardino shootings, but Hooper said that he believed some of the anti-Muslim sentiment has been fomented by Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump’s campaign,” the Sun reports.

“Last month, Trump suggested that all Muslim-Americans should have to register in a national database and suggested that some mosques should be placed under surveillance.”
