If there was a Grinch of Independence Day, it would be Palm Beach County, Florida.

A Kia car dealership in West Palm Beach was issued a “code-enforcement violation” for the American flag banners on its property.

“We’re just trying to show our patriotism,” dealership general manager Mike Wangle says of the six flags festooning its main entrance.

The dealership received a notice from the county announcing the violation and that they had to remove them by Saturday — the 4th of July. If they don’t, they could be subject to a daily fine of $1,000.

“You would think they they would let us leave it up during the fourth and then say take them down after the holiday,” Wangle tells NBC 5.

“I don’t have a problem taking the banners down if we had banners saying ‘we’re open,’ or a ‘big sale,’ those are banners, but when you’re displaying the American flag, that’s a little different. That’s why we’re kind of upset about it,” he adds.

Wangle says he plans to defy the threat from the county and keep the flags up through July 4th, even if they levy a fine.

A cell phone store on the same street had similar banners, but wasn’t threatened with a fine.

So far, the Palm Beach County Code Enforcement Division is ignoring media requests for more information.
