Sony Television is reportedly working on a TV miniseries about Hillary Clinton’s dramatic loss to President Trump during the 2016 election, and producers are framing it as a “Greek tragedy.”

From The Hollywood Reporter:

TriStar Television has optioned Shattered, the book by journalists Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes about Clinton’s shocking upset, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The studio is eyeing Shattered as a limited series; a network is not yet attached. Sources tell THR that TriStar is eyeing premium cable networks like HBO, Showtime and Starz as well as streaming services like Netflix, Amazon and Hulu.

Shattered will be produced by John Davis and John Fox’s SPT-based Davis Entertainment banner. The duo’s credits include NBC’s The Blacklist, Fox’s Behind Enemy Lines pilot and ABC’s Zach Braff comedy pilot Start Up. A writer has not been hired to adapt Shattered for TV.

Sources note that while the New York Times best-seller explored how Clinton lost the race for president to former reality show host Trump, the TV version would aim to frame the story as a Greek tragedy and answer what happened that led to her defeat.

The Clinton TV series comes after HBO announced plans earlier this year to adapt a book by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann about Donald Trump’s historic triumph over Clinton.

“Halperin and Heilemann also penned Game Change, which turned into a critically acclaimed original move for (HBO),” TV Guide reports. “They’ll re-team with Game Change director Jay Roach for the Trump project as well.”

The Clinton TV series is also in addition to “Hillary Clinton The Movie,” which is already underway to highlight the former first lady and secretary of state’s “amazing life,” Radar Online reported in March.

The movie’s producers were reportedly considering Meryl Streep to play Clinton, but apparently ditched that idea when Streep went on a 6-minute tirade against Trump at the Golden Globes, just days before he was sworn into office.

“A move is in the works about Hillary Clinton and her amazing life, and legendary actress Glenn Close has been chosen to play the former first lady and presidential candidate!” the celebrity news site reports. “Glenn and Meryl (Streep)’s names were both mentioned a lot but after Meryl got so political at the Golden Globes, producers thought it might be better to go with Close.”

Regardless, former Clinton staffers are already taking issue with Shattered’s depiction of the campaign.

Former Clinton deputy communications director Christina Reynolds groaned about the book in a post to the blog “Medium” last month.

“I wanted to speak out because after spending most of the campaign watching some people question the enthusiasm and our supporters, it’s hard to read a depiction of the campaign that paints a dedicated, cohesive team as mercenaries with questionable motives who lacked a loyalty to a candidate described as ‘imperial’ and removed from the campaign,” she wrote. “That’s just not the campaign, the staff or the candidate I was in the trenches with for 18 months.”
