The breaking and entering of an Islamic center wasn’t labeled a post-election “hate” crime by the Southern Poverty Law Center, but that’s probably only because it occurred during the holiday weekend.
Hewlett, New York police say 22-year-old Huzaifa Shafeeq broke into the Five Town Islamic Center and “stole money out of the charity box,” ABC 7 reports.
According to police, Shafeeq obtained entry “through a window on Dec. 25th and again on Jan. 1st and removed an undisclosed amount of cash.”
He was arrested at his home without incident.
Newsday reports Shafeeq will be arraigned today on two counts of burglary in the third degree.
