As news is breaking of a NJ Transit train crashing into the Hoboken station, it was just July when a suspected “terror threat” was made against the travel service.

nj-transit-trainCBS 2 reported:

An NJ TRANSIT train was evacuated and swept for explosives late Monday after someone allegedly made a bomb threat.

A law enforcement official told CBS News a passenger made a verbal threat against NJ TRANSIT while on a train heading to Bay Head, New Jersey, from New York. …

A passenger, Kristin Carty of Belmar, New Jersey, told CBS2 the conductor described the incident as a “terror threat.”

“After we got to Newark Penn Station when I overheard, well not overheard, the conductor accidentally, I think, spoke to another conductor over the loud speaker and said that there was a terror threat in the back of the train and a lot of people back there were worried about it,” Carty said.

Less than two weeks ago, a terroristic act was carried out against the train service.

NJ.com reported September 18:

An improvised explosive device in a backpack detonated near the Elizabeth train station early Monday as authorities were using a bomb robot to examine the item, officials said.

The blast occurred around 12:40 a.m. near Morris Avenue and Julian Place. The explosion was not a controlled blast, but happened unintentionally as the robot was cutting the device, according to Mayor Christian Bollwage. No one was injured in the blast, Bollwage said.

Authorities found five devices inside a single backpack near the train station, including one that was detonated. After the explosion, press and bystanders were moved back because the four other explosive devices inside of the backpack were still believed to be live, Bollwage said.

The NJ Transit service has a standing request on its website to report suspicious activity.

“We urge customers who see suspicious activity or unattended packages at stations, aboard trains or buses, or near transit facilities to call the NJ TRANSIT security hotline at 1-888-TIPS-NJT or notify a NJ TRANSIT police officer.  All calls are investigated, and all information is confidential,” the notice reads.
