Folks online think it smells like Smollett.

Some are taking note of the odd misspellings, while others are pointing out how the phrasing doesn’t jive with the crime scene.

The headquarters of the Oklahoma Democratic Party and the nearby offices of the Chickasaw Nation were targeted with a barrage of racist and anti-gay graffiti Thursday, including everything from swastikas and Nazi slogans to messages like “Ni**er Trannies,” “white male genocide,”  and “save very, very young blonde Aryan girls.”

“Oklahoma Democrats HQ this morning,” Eestiboo posted to Twitter with numerous images of the vandalism.

One message, scrawled in black, read: “Jewess Barbara Lerner Spectre will be decapitated,” referring to an academic living in Sweden.

Others, in blue spray paint, included: “Welcome to Germany,” “white planet only gas the rest,” “no chinks allowed,” and “white male genocide,” among others.

“Something feels off,” Estiboo tweeted.

Scores of folks on Twitter agreed.

“This was not a racist act,” Robin Poe concluded. “It was socialist propaganda.”

“Isn’t it time we start hating hoaxing as well?” Based White Urbanite added.

Despite the media embarrassment from rushing to judgement about Jussie Smollett’s hate crime allegations, and the Covington Catholic bungle before that, mainstream media are publicizing the “hate crime” with few critical questions.

By Thursday evening, police issued a bulletin asking for help identifying a suspect.

“Can you help investigators ID this woman, wanted for questioning in connection with graffiti found at a business in the 4000 block of N. Lincoln Blvd?” the Oklahoma City Police Department posted to Facebook, along with several pictures of the middle-aged white woman. “The same graffiti was painted at the State Democratic Party HQ located in the 3700 block of N. Classen.”

OCPD contends the woman is wanted for “questioning,” but the pictures catch her with a paint can in hand, as she’s spraying it on a window.

“Wanted for ‘questioning’? I think it’s pretty cut and dry,” Houston Molinar wrote in the Facebook comments.

“Look for a cat lady with a Hillary bumper sticker,” Mike Poffinbarger posted.

“Wow. Going through a midlife crisis?” Stephanie Tice wrote. “Who graffitis at that age?”

“I smell a Smollett,” one Twitter user wrote in response to Estiboo.

“You’ve been Jussied,” another joked.

For now, the police are assuming the incidents are hate crimes. The building housing the Democratic Party headquarters also includes other tenants, executive director Anna Langthorn told the Associated Press, but she said the vandal made the target of the hate quite clear.

“It does specifically say Democrats and has an arrow pointed at the door,” she said.

Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby issued a prepared statement pointing out how rare such hate crimes are in Oklahoma.

A tribal employee found the offensive messages Tuesday morning, he said, and it’s “very disheartening to see our building defaced by this type of hateful message which is so out of place for Oklahoma.”

“We believe it is important to move past this isolated incident and focus our attention on the important work we do,” Anoatubby told the AP.
