Bitter Democrats wouldn’t be pushing for a repeal of the Electoral College if Hillary Clinton had won, a Democrat congressman told constituents at a town hall meeting.
Minnesota Rep. Tim Walz said he was asked to sign onto a bill throwing out the Electoral College after Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, but lost in the EC.
“(Dem Rep.) Gene Green was carrying the bill to get rid of the Electoral College,” Walz said in a video published by NTK Network.
“I’m thinking to myself, if Hillary Clinton had won, probably none of them would have signed onto it,” he added with a laugh.
No one laughed along with him.
He said he didn’t have a “concrete opinion” on Green’s H.J.Res. 65, the Every Vote Counts Amendment.
According to Green, his proposal has 21 co-sponsors: Reps. Brendan Boyle, Julia Brownley, David Cicilline, Yvette Clarke, Steve Cohen, Joe Courtney, Peter DeFazio, Keith Ellison, Adriano Espaillat, John Garamendi, Al Green, Jared Huffman, Ted Lieu, James McGovern, Mark Pocan, Jan Schakowsky, Jose Serrano, Brad Sherman, Eric Swalwell, Juan Vargas, and Filemon Vela.
“Every important elected office in America today is chosen directly by the people, except the President. The 2000 and 2016 elections have shown us that the Electoral College system is failing, undermining our nation’s basic principles of democracy and equality,” Green said in February.
