Socialist Senator Bernie Sanders unveiled an immigration plan on Thursday that would abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement, decriminalize illegal border crossings, and welcome 50,000 new “climate migrants” each year.
“It is long past time we break up the Department of Homeland Security and refocus its mission on keeping our country safe and responding effectively to emergencies,” the plan reads.
Sanders contends he would immediately work to reverse policies President Trump put in place to stem the flow of nearly 1 million illegal immigrants coming across the southern border each year, including executive actions to reverse to the “Remain in Mexico” asylum system, halt all deportations pending a government audit, halt the border wall construction and reverse policies that don’t require congressional approval, The Hill reports.
And that’s just for starters.
A President Sanders would greatly expand former president Obama’s DACA program for illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, and expand protections from deportation for their parents and any illegal immigrant who has lived in the country for more than five years.
“Sanders then wants to provide a ‘pathway to citizenship’ via Congress for all illegal immigrants living in America – which he says is currently around 11 million – and would ensure that ‘old or low-level contacts with the criminal justice system’ do not prevent illegal immigrants from walking along that path,” Fox News reports.
Sanders also wants to decriminalize illegal border crossings and instead fund “community-based alternatives to detention” that provide “health, legal, educational and work resources.”
The plan would move immigration courts from under the authority of the executive branch to the judiciary system, which would provide illegal immigrants expanded rights, and Sanders would then divert $14 billion in tax money to fund legal defense and interpreter services “throughout every step of the legal process.”
Other changes would shift the duties currently performed by ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection to other agencies. Deportation and enforcement decisions would go to the Department of Justice and customs issues would fall under the Department of Treasury. Naturalization and citizenship issues would be handled by the Department of State.
“Immigration is not a threat to national security,” the plan proclaims, despite the daily barrage of CBP and ICE busts involving criminals smuggling people, drugs, guns, cash, terrorists and other things across the border.
Sanders also wants to “welcome migrants displaced by climate change” with a special new program for up to 50,000 “climate migrants” to move to the U.S. in the first year, with presumably more to follow.
All of those immigrants and new citizens would instantly become eligible for Sanders’ promised government goodies, from “Medicare for All,” to “free” college, to government provided breakfast, lunch, and dinner for every kid in the country.
Michael Joyce, Republican National Committee spokesman, put the plan into proper perspective for Fox News.
“Bernie’s dangerous open borders agenda would incentivize illegal immigration and continue the flow of illegal drugs and criminals into our country,” Joyce said. “Meanwhile, President Trump’s steadfast leadership on this issue has resulted in a 63 percent decline in illegal immigrant apprehensions since May.”
