An illegal immigrant from El Salvador was arrested Saturday after police allege he abducted a 6-year-old girl to sexually assault the child.

alasThe victim’s family told police they locked their Fort Worth home and went to bed around 10 p.m. Friday with their daughter on the couch, and awoke around 4 a.m. Saturday to find the front door open and the child missing, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

The child’s parents called Fort Worth police, who alerted local law enforcement agencies and notified the Texas Crime Information Center and National Crime Information Center, Fort Worth police spokesman Jimmy Pollozani told the news site.

Around 2 p.m., a resident helping to search for the girl heard a scream from a wooded area near Titus Paulsel Park, about a mile from her home, and police allegedly found Edis L. Moya Alas with the child.

Police arrested Alas, 35, and he was initially charged with aggravated kidnapping. Police later added a charge of aggravated sexual assault, NBC DFW reports.

The court set Alas’ bail at $200,000, though federal officials also placed a hold on him because of his illegal status.

The El Salvador national refused to speak with police, according to the news site.

“We thank God for what happened,” the victim’s family told NBC DFW. “It was real hard, but then finally we got her back.”

Police are unsure what, if any, relationship Alas had with the family.

The girl was taken to the hospital for an evaluation after the ordeal but did not suffer from any visible injuries, the Star-Telegram reports.

Pollozani said officials did not issue an Amber Alert for the child because the situation did not meet specific requirements.

“There has to be some type of reasonable suspicion or probable cause that would lead the law enforcement agencies to believe an individual is in imminent fear of serious bodily injury or death,” he said.

Fox 4 reports:

The girl’s mother didn’t talk on camera but says Alas is a complete stranger to the family. Neighbors say they gathered with the family outside the home and prayed with them moments before the girl was found.

“We were praying right there when police came to us and say she is okay,” a relative said. “When we heard that, we say thanks to God.”

Police told the news site that Alas lived in the girl’s neighborhood years ago and was arrested on drug charges two years ago.

They’re now questioning area residents to determine if Alas may have had other victims.
