A Guatemalan teen was found inside a Border Patrol processing center last week holding a premature baby she told aid workers she brought with her after an emergency c-section in Mexico.

An unidentified immigration activist told KGBT’s Sydney Hernandez she came across a 17-year-old girl at the central processing facility in McAllen, Texas who was swaddling a tiny premature baby in a sweatshirt. The activist said the baby was in need of immediate medical attention.

The teen mother reportedly told the activist she had an emergency c-section in Mexico about a month ago, and she was pushed across the border, through the Rio Grande River, in a wheelchair.

Victor Velazquez, a physicians assistant specializing in pediatrics, said the mother put her child’s life in serious danger.

“It’s hard enough for a full-term baby to travel, so any time you add additional factors to a baby, to a premature baby, it’s concerning,” he said. “It’s very concerning.”

Others agreed, including local immigration attorney Alex Martinez. Martinez speculated that the child could have been overlooked because of the severe overcrowding at the facility and others struggling to keep up with thousands of illegal immigrants flooding across the border every day.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have the resources to detain all of these individuals, so it’s expected, it’s known that this is going to occur. People will die and people will get sick,” Martinez told Hernandez.

“It’s becoming a problem of which fire do you put out?” he said. “So it’s creating a very difficult situation for everyone.”

The holding capacity for Border Patrol facilities in the Rio Grande Valley sector is just over 3,000, and there’s currently 7,600 illegal immigrants in custody, KGBT reports.

The mother, herself a minor, and the premature baby were transferred to the Office of Refugee Resettlement, but neither the ORR nor Border Patrol would discuss any details of their situation.

Instead, the ORR issued a benign prepared statement.

“The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) in HHS’ Administration for Children and Families has policies in place to maintain the privacy, security and well-being of unaccompanied alien children (UAC) and we do not identify or discuss specific UAC cases,” the statement read.

News of the neglected premature baby eventually spread on Twitter and several U.S. senators allegedly intervened in the case to pressure officials to release the mother and child from custody.

“After my emergency call to DHS, they say this family well be released immediately Thanks to all who raised the alarm on this critical situation,” Sen. Jeff Merkley wrote. “No child should be subjected to this kind of treatment. This cruelty must be stopped or lives will continue to be lost.”

Folks online seemed to agree, though many believe the young mother and others who drag their children through inhospitable deserts and through drug trafficking networks should be held accountable.

“The illegal mother that broke the law coming here gets released into our society because her baby is sick,” Go Trump posted. “How many mothers living in America that break the law get released just because their babies are sick?”

“What kind of parent drags a premature baby across the border?” Rosie memos added. “They should be arrested.”

“Agree with all of this. And what’s frightening to contemplate, and putting this into perspective, lunatic liberals ask help for a one-month old baby also advocate for aborting one that’s 30 days earlier,” asjah8 posted.

“You call to save a illegal baby while supporting killing Americans babies,” JESSE JAMES wrote. “Make up your mind.”
