A Syracuse, New York man faces assault and child endangerment charges after he beat a disabled veteran for refusing to allow his daughter to pet the man’s service dog.Vidal

The incident occurred around 11:15 a.m. Monday at a Dunkin Donuts on East Genesee Street in Fayetteville, where 21-year-old Dominick Vidal allegedly approached the disabled veteran and his dog at the counter, ABC 6 reports.

“Police say Vidal told them he became angry with the victim and punched him twice in the face after he told his daughter she could not pet his dog since it was a service animal,” according to the news site.

Vidal fled the scene shortly after the attack, before police arrived.

The veteran was treated for minor injuries, and police released surveillance video images to the media of the suspect with a woman and child in hopes of identifying the assailant. Manlius Police Department officials said Vidal called Monday evening “to claim responsibility for his actions” after co-workers alerted him to the police search. He turned himself in to police on Tuesday, Syracuse.com reports.

Police contend they also received “numerous” tips identifying Vidal as the suspect.

.
Vidal, who allegedly told police he overreacted and “should not have done what he did,” was charged with two misdemeanors: assault in the third degree, and endangering the welfare of a child. He’s scheduled to appear in a Fayetteville court Jan. 12, according to the news site.

Numerous commenters online condemned Vidal as a “scumbag,” while others pointed out he has a history of illegal behavior.

“Syracuse, this is what a ‘white thug’ looks like. Just as ‘brave’ as the rest, he assaults a handicapped war veteran. Probably would have been a different outcome if he tried to do that before the vet served his country and got wounded for his service,” PHIL 1956 wrote.

“Obama says we need better gun control. I say BS…This guy was arrested and charged with illegal possession of a firearm 2 years but he’s out walking the streets,” CooP1^ added. “I say we need minimum mandatory sentences for gun crimes and judges who follow the law.”

Commenter cardgunner posted a link to a March 2013 Syracuse.com article about three men who were arrested during a traffic stop. Syracuse police stopped the vehicle for a tinted windows violation and smelled marijuana when they approached the vehicle. Inside, they found an 18-year-old Vidal with three others, as well as a stolen, loaded Browning .22-caliber semi-automatic handgun during a subsequent search of the vehicle.

Vidal was charged with felonies for criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of stolen property, according to the news site, though the outcome of the case is unclear.

Two other men in the vehicle were charged with drug crimes and other infractions, while a fourth person was not charged.

“A lot of men have stopped being men, that’s the problem,” tonyfromsyracuse posted. “Men have become like crybaby children. See, you can tell the guy is a tough guy, probably strong physically, but emotionally, he’s like a little boy who can’t handle things without his fists.

“WAAAA WAAAA, parent failure right there.”

“This goon obviously lacks any sense of impulse control,” hardwired added. “I pity the poor kid in tow behind him.”
