Atheists are celebrating after the Licking County, Ohio sheriff’s office removed a thank you note from its Facebook page.
After an outpouring of support from sympathetic community members in response to the killing of two New York City police officers, the department posted this image:
The sheriff’s department removed the image after the Freedom From Religion Foundation complained.
“It is inappropriate for the LCSO to indicate a preference for Christianity by posting religious imagery on its official Facebook page,” Rebecca Markert, the foundation’s attorney, said in a news release yesterday, according to the Columbus Dispatch.
According to the group, the department took it down after consulting with the county prosecutor.
“I am not going to comment on any press release that they put out,” Licking County Prosecutor Ken Oswalt tells the paper. “Any advice I may or may not have given the sheriff is protected by attorney-client privilege.”
