The Denver police union is calling for the resignation of the department’s chief after they say he “allowed” a memorial to fallen officers to be defaced with red paint.

“We allowed it to be desecrated,” Nick Rogers, president of the Denver Police Protective Association, tells Fox 31.
The union is accusing Chief Robert White of standing by while anti-police protesters desecrated the memorial.
“There is no reason to allow someone to desecrate a memorial,” Rogers says, according to CBS 4. “There is no reason to allow that to happen, it’s wrong … we have a breaking point, and we are there.”
About 150 people protested against the police over the weekend, demanding justice for people killed or “kidnapped” by police and opposing “police terrorism.”
Two of the protesters – 23-year-old Matthew Goldberg and 25-year-old Robert Guerrero – are accused of splashing the memorial with red paint.
9 News reports the pair could face criminal mischief and vandalism charges.
Department spokesman Matt Murray says it’s “department policy” to not engage with protesters, which the union says is how the vandalism took place.
“Our posture in protests, especially First Amendment protests, is not to engage or to create a situation that might create conflict,” he says. “We believe that it’s better for the community not to have conflict that rises to the level of police lines and shouting, and so we allowed the protests to continue.”
Some officers had tears in their eyes at the site of the memorial. Members of the fire department cleaned it up.
“I will ask all 1,400 police officers to rally, and we will respond to the mayor’s office in unison to hand him a letter asking for the chief’s resignation,” the union president tells CBS 4.
