Texas police trooper Billy Spears didn’t think much of rapper Snoop Dogg asking to take a photo with him.
The rapper appeared at the South by Southwest conference and Spears was working security. After taking the photo, he posted it on Instagram with the caption, “Me n my deputy dogg.”
After the photo began making the rounds, Spears landed in hot water with his department.
According to the trooper’s lawyer, Ty Clevenger, the counseling record states “Spears took a photo with a public figure who has a well-known criminal background including numerous drug charges. The public figure posted the photo on social media and it reflects poorly on the agency.”
Spears, a trooper from Upshur County, was ordered to “use good judgment when taking photos with anyone while in uniform. Be mindful of social media outlets and how such photos can negatively affect the agency.”
Clevenger is threatening suit over the matter.
In a letter to DPS Director Steven McCraw, the trooper’s lawyer is asking that the counseling be wiped from Spears’ record, claiming it’s retaliation against his client.
Clevenger says Spears was wrongfully detained by an Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission officer and later suspended by Department of Public Ssfety. According to Clevenger, McCraw reversed the suspension on Spears.
