With Hillary Clinton’s announcement that she wants to be everyone’s “champion,” an African student may wonder if he’s included.
Then-Secretary of State Clinton was holding a Q & A with students in the Democratic Republic of Congo and former basketball player Dikembe Mutombo when a question was apparently lost in translation, The Telegraph reported in 2009.
“We’ve all heard about the Chinese contracts in this country. The interference is from the World Bank against this contract. What does Mr. Clinton think through the mouth of Mrs. Clinton and what does Mr. Mutombo think on this situation? Thank you very much.”
The interpreter mistakenly said Mr. Clinton when he should have said Mr. Obama.
“You want me to tell you what my husband thinks? My husband is not the Secretary of State, I am. You ask my opinion. I will tell you my opinion; I’m not going to channel my husband,” Clinton responded, slouching back in her chair.
The paper observed the erroneous question “clearly touched Mrs. Clinton’s rawest nerve.”
