A court has ruled a soccer fan used a 24-inch inflatable shark “like an axe” during a celebration of his team’s victory and fined him.
Grimsby Town fan Kenneth Meech was in the front row during his team’s 3-1 win over Barnet in February.
He was so excited, he wildly waved his inflatable shark about, repeatedly striking field security officer Cgagi Gladyng.
The steward testified at the Willesden Magistrates’ Court in London that he was “hurt” by the blow-up toy being waved “like an axe” and described the three blows to his head “as like being hit by a roll of paper,” the BBC reports.
“We were jumping, ecstatic and excited, at getting the winning goal,” Meech said after the incident.
“It was euphoric.”
Gladynd added he became “frightened” during the pandemonium.
Sharn Mardner, who was prosecuting the case, told the court the attack was caused by Meech’s “pent-up tension and aggression spilling out at the end of the win.”
“He was using it as a weapon,” according to Mardner.
“He was so intent on his actions that he didn’t see the officer watching him doing it and saying it.”
“I’m gutted, obviously, but I’ve got to respect the court’s decision,” Meech says, according to the Grimsby Telegraph.
“I am a bit shocked but that is just the way it goes.
“I’ll still be supporting the mighty Mariners but I probably won’t be carrying an inflatable with me this time.”
Meech was ordered to pay £700 (about $1,093) in costs, compensation of £100 (about $156) and a victim surcharge of £70 (about $110).
