Hillary Clinton is starting to feel the bern — of Bernie Sanders’ new polling numbers in New Hampshire.
A report tonight by WMUR reveals a one-time 60 percentage point lead for Clinton has “all but evaporated” in a new Granite State poll conducted by the television station.
“It would still be a stretch to call Hillary Clinton anything but the frontrunner,” political directer Josh McElveen says in the report, “but if you thought there wouldn’t be any primary at all, well Bernie Sanders has managed to turn that wisdom upside down.
“And if Joe Biden gets in this thing, who knows.”
The poll conducted by WMUR finds Clinton with 42% support among Democrats but Sanders making up ground fast, with 36%.
“It’s also important that he continues to be seen as the more likeable candidate so now he has higher net favorability ratings than Clinton does, even though he’s not as well known,” says Andrew Smith with the University of New Hampshire.
Forty percent of respondents believe Sanders is the “most likeable” candidate, while only 24% believe Clinton is the most likeable.
“The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.9 percent, prompting the pollster to call the race a statistical tie,” according to the news station.
In a head-to-head match up with Sanders, voters view Clinton is far-and-away the least trustworthy of the two.
“Asked who they believe is the least honest candidate, 59% said they did not know, while 31% chose Clinton and 3% chose Sanders,” the poll finds.
Sanders is named by 43% of respondents as the candidate who “best represents the values of Democrats like yourself,” while 34% answered Clinton is that candidate.
