Police say a would-be burglar admitted to his crime before it even took place.

Scott EsserScott Robert Esser of Elizabeth, New Jersey allegedly “butt dialed” 911 while he was plotting a break in, according to Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey Soriano.

Police say they received the “errant, open-line emergency cell phone call” July 27 and overheard “male voices,” NJ.com reports.

Unclear of the location, dispatchers decided to continue listening to the call and “discovered they were discussing an apparent burglary.”

The same day, a break in at a Branchburg home was reported, according to CBS 2.

“The home was entered by force and dresser drawers were emptied of their contents,” according to police. The homeowner claims $1,355.00 in  jewelry had been stolen.

Esser was pulled over on the Garden State Parkway and arrested by Somerset County detectives, My Central Jersey reports.

After obtaining a search warrant for Esser’s car, detectives found “miscellaneous pieces of jewelry, electronic devices, a Playstation 4 gaming system, a .38 caliber handgun, United States bonds worth approximately $11,300 and burglary tools,” according to prosecutor Soriano.

He’s now charged two counts of third-degree burglary, two counts of third-degree theft, three counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief, and second-degree burglary for the incidents in Branchburg, Stafford Township and Berkeley Heights.

His bail was set at $100,000.
