A Kentucky man was found in a dark cemetery because he wanted to give his father a piece of his mind. Only problem? The elder died more than 30 years ago.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies say Michael May made the late-night trip to Pilot Baptist Cemetery near Stanford to “dig up his late father’s grave in order to argue with him,” WAVE reports.
Lincoln County Constable Delbert Mitchell says he saw a truck parked at the cemetery Monday night and went to investigate.
“I went back and hollered for him to step back in the light and he told me to step back to the dark. That’s when I went and got my flashlight. He started hollering out [Bible] verses at me,” Constable Mitchell tells NBC 18. “He told me he was trying to dig his dad up, so his dad could go to Heaven.”
In an interview from the jail, May says he doesn’t believe he did anything wrong and was only trying to help his long-dead father.
“I see the truth…he needs to be on the ground. Not under it,” according to May.
Authorities say May was intoxicated during the incident. He’s charged with charged with violating a grave, public intoxication and possession of marijuana.
Investigators wonder what would have happened if Constable Mitchell didn’t happen to be driving by the cemetery Monday night.
As for May, he says he may not be done trying to dig up his father’s grave for another verbal go-round.
“It’s a possibility. If the truth doesn’t come out and nobody sees the truth, yeah I’ll do it again.”
