One of the faces of defiant illegal immigrants – Jose Antonio Vargas – loves to lecture real, actual Americans about immigration and the evils of “white privilege.”

But now it’s been revealed he’s been living off the American system and not contributing much to it.

Red Alert Politics obtained a copy of a lien filed against Vargas by the IRS in February:

Vargas-Lien

The lien, totaling $41,945.44, stems from an apparent failure to pay federal taxes in 2010 — the year, he says, before he came out as “undocumented.”

“After outing myself in that article, I stopped using the doctored card my grandfather gave me–including filing my taxes with it,” he tells the news site.

“As I noted in the Times essay—and as I’ve repeated in many interviews—I paid state and federal taxes using that card in the prior years, which I started using when I began working as a teenager.”

In addition to being a champion for amnesty, Vargas produced a documentary for MTV titled “White People,” which was supposedly a look at how whites have benefited from capitalism and America’s legal system.

Red Alert Politics notes Vargas wrote a check for $48,039.98 two days after the lien was filed. It’s unclear why that amount is significantly more than the lien.

“To my knowledge, the lien payment I made this year fulfills my tax liability,” according to Vargas.
