Kentucky state Trooper Joseph Cameron Ponder is dead after a seemingly routine traffic stop turned fatal Sunday night.
Police say Ponder had pulled over 25-year-old Joseph Thomas Johnson-Shanks of Florissant, Missouri on Interstate 24 when Shanks fled.
During a high-speed chase, Shanks stopped abruptly, causing Ponder to “make contact” with his vehicle.
“At that point, the suspect leaned out of the driver-side window and fired multiple rounds at the trooper’s car, striking the hood, the windshield and striking our trooper,” Trooper Jay Thomas says, according to Police One.
Ponder was hit “several times” and died a short time later at the hospital.
Shanks fled the scene and was found several hours later. He was shot after he allegedly refused to drop his weapon. He died as well.
Wonderland Advocacy Research has unearthed several photos which show Shanks was involved in the Ferguson protests after the death of Michael Brown.
“The 25 year old is an amateur tattoo artist who posts under the name Jay MileHigh. Shanks’ has a previous criminal record with arrests for theft and burglary,” according to the site.
The site retrieved several photos it says was posted by Shanks on Facebook, including his banner:
W.A.R. posts several photos from Shanks’ account from the riots after prosecutors declined to file charges against Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in the death of Brown.
He even posed with officers:
The site reports Shanks took a rented limousine to Brown’s funeral, even posting photos to Facebook of the time:
It’s unclear why the Missouri resident was in Kentucky.
According to Police One, “Johnson-Shanks had been arrested in August 2014 for failing to appear in an unspecified case. In May of this year, investigators began searching for him for questioning in the theft of lottery tickets.”
