Either the CNN Republican debate moderators learned a lesson from the Fox News hosts speaking 31.7% of the time in the first debate, or they really were more interested in hearing the candidates instead of themselves.

debate trump fiorinaProfessor Eric Ostermeier finds moderators Jake Tapper, Hugh Hewitt and Dana Bash spoke 15.6% of the debate time.

As a percentage, that’s less than half of the amount of time Fox News moderators Megyn Kelly, Bret Baier and Chris Wallace spoke.

The CNN hosts spoke for 25 minutes and seven seconds during the nearly 3-hour debate. That’s seven minutes less than the 31 minutes and 53 seconds the Fox moderators gabbed during last month’s event, which was only about two hours, according to Ostermeier.

As for the candidates, NPR reports front runner Donald Trump had the most speaking time, largely because the moderators pointed many of the questions to him, or made the questions about him, allowing for a follow-up.

Trump spoke for 18 minutes and 47 seconds. Gov. Scott Walker spoke the least, grabbing 8 minutes and 29 seconds of the time.

Here’s the breakdown, according to NPR:

Donald Trump: 18:47
Jeb Bush: 15:48
Carly Fiorina: 13:30
Ben Carson: 12:56
Chris Christie: 12:36
Marco Rubio: 11:21
Ted Cruz: 10:45|
Rand Paul: 10:28
John Kasich: 9:44
Mike Huckabee: 9:20
Scott Walker: 8:29

Ostermeier notes, “Whereas FOX moderators asked questions of a half-minute or longer on 25 occasions during the debate in Cleveland, CNN moderators did so only nine times on Wednesday.”
