A Kentucky man is facing first degree robbery charges after police said he threatened to inject gas station employees with a syringe of what he claimed was HIV infected blood.

medleyLouisville police arrested Matthew Medley, 25, Thursday after officers recognized him from surveillance footage of a Speedway gas station robbery that occurred Sunday, WDRB reports.

Medley’s arrest warrant alleges he went into the store walked directly behind the counter, where he helped himself to several cartons of cigarettes, according to WAVE 3 News.

Two employees attempted to intervene and Medley allegedly pulled out a syringe and “was making stabbing motions with the syringe and stated to the employees that if they didn’t get back, he would give them HIV,” WDRB quoted from court records.

Witnesses told police the robber, who also carried a razor blade, fled the scene with the cigarettes. Officers reviewed the store’s surveillance video and recognized Medley from the footage. Police allege a Speedway employee also said a photo of Medley “closely resembles” the culprit.

Medley was arraigned Friday on a first degree robbery charge – a Class B felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison, according to state statute.

WHAS 11 reports Medley remains at Louisville Metro Corrections on a $5,000 bond.

He’s scheduled back in court Oct. 19.

The stab-happy suspect appeared quite smug in his jail mugshot published online, which didn’t sit well with several readers.

“I hope the police shoot this piece of garbage first and ask questions later,” Zach Marley posted to Facebook.

“I have a cure for that smug POS,” Kevin Clark added, “a 9mm right between the eyes.”

Others pointed out that the city gives needles away for free.

“The city hands out these deadly weapons for free. We need stronger, more common sense syringe control,” Gina Taylor wrote. “Ban everyone from having them! Even those who don’t commit crimes with them. The potential is there. Needles look really scary and some people are afraid to even see one, therefore they must be bad!”

“Louisville thinks it’s okay to give them out free, now they’re using them as weapons. Wow!” Mictavish Huff wrote.

Another commenter, Eric Medley, posted a YouTube video of a shirtless Matt Medley playing the drums, while poster Jennifer Leslie wrote that Medley was her friend and a good person that made bad life decisions.

“I’ve known him my entire life,” Leslie wrote. “Things happen to people in life and good people make bad choices and drugs also control good people. Anyone that knows this can understand addiction is a terrible and mind changing thing. Pray for him.”
