John Harley Hughey “despised liberals, pimentos, sarcasm (although it was his forte), laziness, and imperfection,” according to his obituary.
And don’t get him started on President Obama.
Hughey died October 28th in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and his obituary, published in the Examiner-Enterprise, is the final example of what is described as his “cranky disposition.”
It reads in part:
Now let’s be honest…J had a cranky disposition. For lack of a better term, he was an “ass.” And all who bore the brunt of J’s class ring to the back of their head can attest to such. J despised liberals, pimentos, sarcasm (although it was his forte), laziness, and imperfection. As J would say, “If you can’t do it right, then don’t do it. And if it breaks, fix it.”
In honor of J, the family would ask that you write your Congressman and ask for the resignation of Barack Obama. This can only be viewed as his final protest, as anyone who spent the final weeks of J’s life with J will tell you, he went down politically swinging and his commentary on such was nothing short of enduring.
But more importantly J was a man of God and he would not want us simply mourning. Rather, he would have us celebrating his new life, his being born again. The material world provides us with the environment to grow not only into physically mature adults, but into spiritually mature human beings, as we prepare to one day take our place in our heavenly home. This is the process Jesus called “being born again.”
In John 3: verses 3-6, Jesus proclaimed, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born again.” It is from this spiritual perspective that we are communicated this truth: that J’s physical death is not death at all. Rather, it is his birth from this world into the next. J is in effect, born again. And it is this event, the death of J’s physical body and the rebirth of his spiritual one, which he would have us celebrate.
Hughey isn’t the only one in recent months to use his obituary as a political statement.
Elaine Fydrych died August 13th, several months before she could vote for someone other than Hillary Clinton.
But the former Runnemede, New Jersey resident made her parting plea very clear in her obituary:
Elaine requests, “In lieu of flowers, please do not vote for Hillary Clinton.”
Several leaving remembrances on her online guestbook are heeding her request.
“May God Bless You Elaine and keep you forever in his arms. And yes, I will honor your request. RIP,” one person wrote.
“I can honestly say that you were one of the bravest people I have ever known. Although a terrible disease took your body, it never conquered your spirit. You maintained your love, positivity, and humor until the very end. We will all love and miss you. See you later ‘kiddo!’” said Kyleigh Nevins and Andrew Segrave-Primus.
Lee, Lisa and Alisha Walinski wrote, “We were so lucky to know Elaine through our children, from proms to weddings , it was so nice to always be included as part of the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Fydrych family, she truly was a wonderful person and she will be missed by many!! We will gladly honor your wish also Not to vote for Hillary!”
Here’s Fydrych’s obit:
Elaine Fydrych (nee Szumanski), on August 13, 2015, of Runnemede, formerly of Gloucester Township. Age 63. Loving daughter of Clara Szumanski and the late Stanley. Beloved wife of Joseph A. for 37 years. Devoted mother of Joseph M. (Jennifer J.) and Kevin S. Dear daughter-in-law of Marian Fydrych and the late Joseph L. and sister-in-law of Garry Fydrych (Kathy). Also survived by many close friends and family members.
Elaine was born and raised in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia and was a very talented child, singing, dancing, playing the piano and ukulele. She appeared on local children’s TV shows in the 1950’s and 60s like Chief Halftown and Happy the Clown. Later in life, Elaine discovered her love of the theater, acting and comedy. Elaine became affiliated with the Broadway theatre in Pitman, NJ and appeared in a number of productions there, starting with their opening production of Nunsense as Rev. Mother. She loved performing there and appeared in numerous shows such as: Vera in ‘Mame’, Mrs. Shinn in ‘Music Man’, Ms. Stephanie in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, Gypsy and Over the River and Through the Woods over the years.
Elaine was also a regular with Mr. Malcolm, Broadway’s children’s theater company where she played various characters over the years. She has also appeared in original theater productions at the Walnut Street Theater and the Adrienne Theater for Gay Feast in Philadelphia. Some other venues include: the Ritz, Haddonfield Play and Players, and the Woodbury Sketch Club. Her acting skills led her to do commercials, corporate videos and minor parts in a few independent films. She was a natural at comedy and her standup act was part of a Comcast local comic special in 2008. But her love for the theater and family overshadowed her natural comic ability and found she did not have the time to do it all right and decided to concentrate on the theater

Funeral Mass 11am Thursday at Our Lady of Hope Parish, St. Agnes RC Church, 701 Little Gloucester Road, Blackwood, NJ. Interment St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Chews Landing.
