In his apparent attempt to defend Hillary Clinton and knock Bernie Sanders, former Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin inadvertently made the case for at least two Republican candidates for president.
Appearing on Boston Herald Radio, Harkin was asked about the establishment candidate (Clinton) versus the non-establishment candidate (Sanders) running for the Democratic nomination.
In a round-about defense of Hillary, Harkin said, “Bernie Sanders has been in public office I think longer than Hillary Clinton. He was mayor, then he was a congressman, then he’s been a senator. I mean, what makes him non-establishment. He’s establishment, too!
“If you want someone who’s non-establishment, maybe you should vote for Dr. Carson or than Trump character, ya know?”
Harkin endorsed Clinton at an August event in Iowa.
“She’s a fighter. She’s a fighter for our families, for our kids, to make sure we have a good future for all those Tom Harkins running around out there someplace whose parents don’t have very much.”
