During an appearance on MSNBC this morning, Republican front runner Donald Trump was asked to take a “gender equity” pledge for members of his cabinet. That is, he would strike an arbitrary balance of men and women, as opposed to appointed the most qualified individuals.
“Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski asked Trump if he would follow the lead of new liberal Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who appointed 15 men and 15 women to his cabinet.
According to Brzezinski, when Trudeau was asked why, he said because “it’s 2015.”
Trump responded by saying because his company has so many women as executives, “I’m not one that has to make a pledge.”
“I wouldn’t want that. Because I will tell you: I want the best person at each position… I’m going to get the best people for the job.”
As an example, Trump named billionaire investor Carl Icahn as a good person to handle trade deals with China.
