Officials at a Navy base in Hawaii last evacuated the military exchange last night after a shopper noticed someone carrying a weapon in the store and alerted authorities.
The incident occurred around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to KHON 2, which posted a picture on its website of several dozen people standing in the store’s parking lot. Police evacuated the main exchange – where military families purchase household goods – as well as the commissary.
At 7:30 p.m., the stores reopened when authorities determined the suspect was the store’s security guard, the news site reports.
Several at the scene contacted the news site to alert them of the situation. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the evacuation.
“Dear God, people. Spit out the grass!” KHON 2 commenter John Stephens posted.
The incident was nearly as ridiculous as the reaction to the discovery of a “suspicious” water bottle left in a restroom at the Norfolk Navy Exchange last month.
The Virginian-Pilot reports someone reported the abandoned water bottle around 11:30 a.m. Oct. 5 and after somehow determining it was “suspicious” officials evacuated about 200 shoppers from the store and commissary, according to a Navy spokeswoman Kelly Wirfel.
“Wirfel said the Naval security personnel and an explosive ordinance disposal unit handled the incident. The authorities tested the liquid in the bottle and determined it was water,” according to the Virginian-Pilot.
“Yup … we sure are winning that war on terrorism, aren’t we? Got those pesky terrorists on the run, we do!” Donald Vtipil quipped in the comments. “They sure aren’t going to disrupt OUR daily lives, no sirree!”
“C’mon man, you cannot be serious!” Thaddeus Kosciuszko posted. “These days, one is just as likely to see a Dasani vending machine as one that dispenses a Pepsi or a Coke. At least a water bottle is clear – one cannot image what might be lurking inside of that soda can.”
