A University of Wisconsin Madison professor offered students in her LGBTQ studies class extra credit if they visited the state Capitol on Thursday to testify against a bill she opposes.

profgrathman-e1448046162631Dr. Elizabeth Cabell Hankinson Gathman is a graduate of UW Madison’s sociology department and this semester she is teaching Intro to LGBTQ Studies (SOC/GWS 200), a required class for students in the LGBTQ studies certificate program.

On Wednesday, Prof. Gathman related to her students that she would give them extra credit on their final course grade if they went to the state Capitol to testify in opposition to AB 469, a bill that establishes uniform policies for how Wisconsin public schools will handle locker room and restroom accommodations for transgender students.

A slide from her classroom presentation tells students to “Write-up [sic] analysis of proposed law” and “email instructor photo of self waiting to testify” to get a boost to their grade.

In the wake of confusion created by the U.S. Department of Education over how public schools should accommodate transgendered students, AB 469 simply asserts that if a young person prefers to not use the restroom of their birth-assigned sex they may be accommodated by using another private restroom, such as one reserved for teachers or visitors.

State Rep. Jesse Kremer (R) explains, “This policy simply allows a parent or guardian to petition a school board, quietly and privately, on behalf of their child to request an alternate accommodation if their child is not comfortable using the facilities of their birth sex.”

In addition to Gathman offering students credit to lobby against the bill, the official Facebook page for the class repeatedly urged visitors to the page to take time to contact lawmakers and express opposition to the measure.
