York County Sheriff’s Office deputies recently paid a visit to a local homeowner after a neighbor contacted the department with concerns he might be an “ISIS sympathizer” because of his Christmas lights display, the Portland Press Herald reports.

The two-story arrangement consists of the words “ISIS” in red lights on a wall at ground level, with an illuminated Santa Claus on the deck above and a lighted stream of white lights between the two.

“Sheriff’s deputies visited the home and the word ‘ISIS’ is lit up bright and clear. What is not so clear is that Santa Claus is ‘relieving’ himself on the words,” York County Sheriff William King said in a statement Saturday.

“Deputies spoke with the homeowner explaining why the sheriff’s office took an interest in his holiday display and the homeowner stated he was going to rearrange the lights to clear up any doubts about his message.”

King told the New York Daily News the homeowner “probably should’ve used yellow lights” for Santa’s urine, “but he used white lights.

“You couldn’t really distinguish what Santa was doing,” King said, adding that the homeowner “doesn’t like what’s going on in the world, so he wanted to make his own little political statement.”

The sheriff wrote in an email to the Press Herald that “no law was broken and we did not tell him to take the lights down or to reconfigure them.”

News of the urinating Santa display generated mixed emotions online.

“Wow, so much of what the Christmas season is about,” Nancy Martin posted. “Making political statements and hatefulness.”

“Straight case of 1st Amendment being exercised,” SPM_BC wrote. “Offended? Too bad.”

“Talking a joyous childhood symbol and using it to make a crass statement is not my idea of good taste, nor do I think it is for many Mainers,” willardbeachdawg posted. “Many children (and some adults) think that Santa is real, and why would Santa do such a terrible thing? Would you use the Baby Jesus in that way?

“If you have to be so crass, use the Ford guy peeing on Chevy, but leave poor Santa alone!”

“Where are we headed?” mijalted questioned in response. “It sure is a sad commentary of what we are becoming as a society.”

Teddy wrote that he thought the display was “awesome!”

“There is nothing wrong with an American showing a little patriotism,” he posted.

“Private property. Do whatever you want,” Sweet Paw Jones wrote. “Even if it was pro-ISIS. Even if he’s flying the stars and bars. Burning a cross. Putting up a pentagram. Private property is still a thing. I’m kind of upset on whoever called the cops.”
