Seeking to overcome racism, a Florida city has renamed a major street after one of the most racially divisive presidents in modern American history.

The city of Riviera Beach officially renamed “Old Dixie Highway” as “President Barack Obama Highway” Thursday.

Obama highway“We are stepping up to a new day, a new era, and replacing Old Dixie with Barack Obama, who represents change,” Riviera Beach Mayor Thomas Masters tells CBS 12.

The mayor claims the new name is intended to close “the chapter on racism” and begin “a renewed sense of pride.”

Long-time resident Mary Brabham says the change is welcome.

“It’s time to let the past be the past.  We are moving forward and do things not for one, but for all.”

The Sun-Sentinel reports it is the second road in Palm Beach County to be named after the current president.

Two years ago, Pahokee in western part of the county renamed East First Street to Barack Obama Boulevard.

The Riviera Beach city council voted in August on the name change. They note the street intersects with another road named for Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

“The name Old Dixie does not align in any way with the goal of racial and social equality,” Kendra Williams, a Riviera Beach resident, said during that meeting, according to the paper. “Let’s just move forward and move on, because it’s time.”

It’s unclear if they will “move forward and move on” and rename Obama Highway to something else after he leaves office in January 2017.
