If it wasn’t for a concerned American being on the lookout — seeing something and saying something — who knows what might have happened.

illegal-immigrant-crossing-signAn alert citizen reported “suspicious activity of two males” in Highgate Springs, Vermont and it was discovered they were illegal immigrants who had crossed the northern U.S. border into the country, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.

An agent from the Swanton Border Patrol station found the men walking along Route 7 in Highgate Springs the day after Christmas. He observed the men “approach a residence” and at that moment, the agent identified himself.

“Through Spanish language,” the agent determined the pair were illegal immigrants from Guatemala and “were illegally present in the U.S., a violation of USC 1325, Entry Without Inspection.” They were both detained.

The men, 22 and 24, we found to have legal status in Canada, but not the United States.

“Both men were en route to visit family members in Massachusetts and planning on returning to Canada to continue working,” according to CBP.

The federal agency says it granted the pair “a voluntary return to Canada through the Champlain, New York, port of entry.”

The Swanton Sector thanks and appreciates the concerned citizen for reporting this incident,” according to CBP.
