The only Chick-fil-A in New York City reopened today after a week-long shutdown to fix supposed issues raised by city officials.
The three-story restaurant in Manhattan’s Herald Square first opened in October to lines around the building, but ran into complications Dec. 15 when it received a poor score on a city health inspection, Fox 5 NY reports.
A Christmas eve re-inspection resulted in more infractions, prompting the store’s owners to voluntarily shut down to make changes and retrain employees. Over the weekend, a “Grade Pending” sign from the city health department hung in the store’s window as the company worked to address six alleged infractions – five of which the city deemed critical.
Chick-fil-A company officials have courted controversy in recent years by speaking out about same-sex marriage, religion and other topics. The conservative corporate perspective undoubtedly grates against New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s far-left “progressive” administration, though there’s no explicit indication the alleged violations were politically motivated.
ABC 7 reports the restaurant’s most recent inspection resulted in six violations for a total of 59 “violation points.” The city awards restaurants its worst grade – a “C” – once they accumulate more than 28 violation points.
“We are taking these violations seriously and felt the decision to close was the right one, ensuring we could focus solely on correcting the issues reported including: fruit flies in the restaurant, maintaining cold food temperatures, improper storage of an empty container and wiping cloths not being sanitized properly,” Chick-fil-A posted to its website.
The statement said the company is also working with consultants to conduct independent inspections, ABC 7 reports.
“All of this activity and the commitment of our team will ensure the cleanest and safest environment going forward – something that we are committed to chain-wide,” the statement read.
The store reopened Tuesday, Jan. 5 at 6:30 a.m., according to CNBC.
Investor’s Business Daily noted the irony of the Chick-fil-A’s minor violations in a city known for its rat-infested restaurants.
“Last year, 77 out of 154, or about half, of New York’s restaurants were rat-infested — and that’s on the ritzy Upper East Side, where a meal can run into hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.
“Residents take great pride in filming YouTubes of New York’s restaurants through their windows at night, cameras on as the vermin scurry around,” according to the site.
“So it’s more than a little passing strange that the city targeted the city’s only Chick-fil-A for health code violations just months after it opened its doors.
Chick-fil-A was subject to all sorts of city-government opprobrium last year after its Christian owner noted his opposition to gay marriage. A boycott was called, and consumers refused to boycott it — including the consumers near gay West Hollywood, as IBD noted here.”
Openly gay city councilman Daniel Dromm was openly hostile to the idea of a Chick-fil-A in the city when he spoke with the Huffington Post in 2014.
“We don’t need bigots coming to New York City,” he said.
IBD opines that the “voluntary” shutdown last week could be the city health department’s way of sending the same message.
“City officials from Boston to Chicago and definitely New York condemned Chick-fil-A as ‘hate chicken,’” according to the site. “Now the place has been temporarily shuttered soon after opening? Nice restaurant you got here, be a shame if anything happened to it, as they say in those parts.
“Yes, color us skeptical something else is going on.”
