The GOP gravy train the likes of Karl Rove and Alex Castellanos have been riding for years is poised to derail.

During an appearance on “Meet The Press” Sunday, veteran Republican strategist Castellanos delivered some sobering news to the GOP establishment: It’s over.

The former advisor to George W. Bush and Mitt Romney said he could find “no takers” for his bid to launch an anti-Donald Trump campaign in the weeks leading up to Iowa and New Hampshire voting, and what will be, will be.

Regarding that, Politico reported January 5:

Those who’ve met with Castellanos say he’s offered detailed presentations on how such an offensive would play out. Castellanos has said that an anti-Trump ad campaign, which would be designed to cast him as a flawed strongman, would cost well into the millions. It was unclear, the sources said, whether Castellanos, who did not respond to a request for comment, would ultimately go through with the effort.

Now, when asked by host Chuck Todd about the effort less than a week later, Castellanos responded, “No takers.

“It’s too confusing this year for the establishment. It’s getting late in the game. If you disqualify Trump, you could help Ted Cruz. The establishment doesn’t want that.

“If you disqualify Cruz, you could help Trump. So a lot of the establishment is just sitting on the sidelines and I think the moment to go after either has passed.”

“Is it too late?” Chuck Todd asked.

“It’s too late,” Castellanos confirmed. “And it just, two-thirds of the party is in one of those guy’s pocket. One-third is in the establishment lane.”
