A woman, along with at least one other “Black lives Matter” protester, commandeered a press conference being held Wednesday by U.S. mayors and refused to leave the podium.
Holding a sign reading, “16 shots & a cover up #LaquanMcDonald #ResignRahm,” which refers to the Chicago police killing of black teen Laquan McDonald last year, the woman held a silent protest at the U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting in Washington, D.C.
Activists have been protesting Mayor Rahm Emanuel, demanding his resignation over the handling of the case.
Most of the mayors stood motionless as the woman stood silently in front of Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.
“Black lives matter!” one man yelled.
“That’s why we’re here,” someone responded.
“Let her talk,” the man said. “We’re citizens. Citizens got something to say.”
A woman off camera can be seen motioning, trying to get the protester off the stage but to no avail. She just looked away.
The mayors didn’t budge — seemingly handcuffed by the race protester.
After several moments, Rawlings-Blake continued reading her statement.
