Construction workers spent Monday repairing $35,000 in damage to a Morro Bay, California Burger King after employees duped by a prank call smashed out all of the business’ windows.

A prankster called the Burger King around 11 p.m. Saturday claiming to be a representative from the local fire department, and told employees there was a gas leak on site and they must immediately smash the store’s windows to provide ventilation, KSBY reports.

“Holy crap, I just watched a team of Burger King employees wreak havoc on the Burger King in Morro Bay,” Brian Jagger posted to Facebook with a video of the destruction. “Right when I rolled up, they had just finished busting all of the windows out and the guy in the white Dodge just smashed … the front doors.”

Jagger was referring to the store’s manager on duty, who is seen in the video ramming his vehicle into the front entrance, according to the news site.

CalCoastNews.com reports police and firefighters responded to the alleged gas leak and determined it didn’t exist. In total, the Burger King employees smashed out more than a dozen windows and demolished the front entrance doors.

The store was closed Sunday as employees boarded up the windows, and contractors came in Monday to replace them, according to the news site.

The owner of the store told KSBY it reopened at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, and that the manager on duty who rammed the building with his vehicle is suspended.

The San Louis Obispo Tribune’s editorial board weighed in on the incident Monday.

“Yes, the employees should have immediately called 911, rather than complying with the bogus order. But let’s not blame the victims here, OK? Panic can make even the most level-headed among us do the darndest things,” the editorial read.

“As for prank calls, when did they turn so malicious?” it continued. “It’s one thing to randomly phone strangers and ask whether their refrigerators are running. It’s another to deliberately target a business, impersonate a public safety official and warn the innocent person on the other end of the line that he or she is in imminent danger.

“That’s not a prank. It’s a crime.”

Morro Bay police are investigating the call in hopes of tracking down the prankster.

The city of Morro Bay issued a press release after the incident warning residents that the fire department doesn’t typically call business directly if there’s an issue. Recorded calls, however, are sometimes sent during major emergencies. City officials advised residents to call 911 to verify an emergency if they’re unsure, according to the Tribune.

The prank prompted a lot of comments online, many of which related the incident to the nationwide push for a $15 an hour minimum wage for fast food workers.

“And these people think they should get $15/hr?” Jim Kozlovich posted to Facebook.

“$15 for people so DUMB as this crew is ridiculous,” Will Ramsey wrote. “You want to make more money? Get a real job and stop complaining. Also, I would never hire anyone of these people based on their job performance and comprehension skills. How dumb can these employees be? Who is the manager that said yeah that’s a good idea, drive your car through the entrance instead of just opening the doors.”

“Yup, that bunch is worth $15 an hour,” Allen Burnett posted.

“I don’t think the insurance company is going to go along with paying this claim,” Maryann Stensrude added.

Others seemed to question the employees’ story.

“It looks like way too much gusto was put into the effort to clear the ‘gas fumes,’” Lynette Tornatzky posted.
