The Hillary Clinton campaign is finding out it can raise only so much money from big banks and Wall Street.
Now, the national finance director is practically begging supporters to contribute.
Dennis Cheng, National Finance Director for Hillary for America, in an email titled, “This is our wake-up call,” writes, “We’ve been massively outraised.”
For the first time this campaign, we’re being outraised by our opponent. Bernie raised more than $20 million in January (and another $3 million so far this month) — we fell short at only $15 million for Hillary for America.
If you’ve believed that Hillary Clinton is going to win this election because other people are going to step up and take care of it, this should be a very loud wake-up call.
There’s no cavalry coming — it’s just people like you who are going to decide whether or not to step up to elect the first woman president our country has ever had.
In an email yesterday, campaign manager Robby Mook struck a similar brow-beating tone:
Bernie says we’re not as energetic or enthusiastic as his supporters. It’s true that more of his supporters have stepped up to fund his campaign, but I think he’s dead wrong (and more than a little insulting) about the strength and character of Team Hillary.
During an appearance on Bloomberg Monday, Clinton campaign spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri repeatedly stumbled over herself as she attempted to not answer questions about the campaign’s fundraising.
She said the campaign has raised $150 million, of which “hundreds of thousands” came from small donors.
“I’m just asking why (Hillary) doesn’t raise as much from small donors as (Bernie Sanders) does,” Mark Halperin press Palmieri.
She ultimately never answered the question.
