Hillary Clinton had a softball pitched to her during Thursday’s debate: the opportunity to say she disagrees with Madeleine Albright and doesn’t think women who don’t support her are going to hell.

Instead, Hillary watched it go by.

Moderator Judy Woodruff asked Clinton, “As you know, your strong supporter former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said the other day that there’s a special place in hell for women who don’t support other women.

“Do you agree with what she said?”

“Well, look,” Clinton responded, “I think that, um, she’s been saying that for as long as I’ve known her, which is about 25 years. But it doesn’t change my view that we need to empower everyone, women and men to make the best decisions in their mind that they can make,” before going on about “equal pay,” paid family leave, and knocking down barriers.

The question is in reference to an appearance with the candidate Saturday afternoon, when Albright threatened women with dire consequences if they don’t support her preferred candidate.

Attempting to sway young women to support Hillary, Albright said, “We can tell our story about how we climbed the ladder and a lot of you younger women don’t think you have to — it’s been done — it’s not done and you have to help. Hillary Clinton will always be there for you.

“And just remember: there’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other,” she said.

Hillary burst out laughing as the audience cheered.
